Serving Albemarle County
Albemarle County Service Authority (ACSA) provides water distribution and sewer collection services to nearly 23,000 clients, serving over 86,000 Albemarle residents. Major service areas include urban areas as well as Crozet, Red Hill and Scottsville. A growing community, Albemarle County Service Authority averages a 2% growth rate per year in new customers. The community enjoys a high-quality ACSA water supply recently expanded from a protected watershed contained almost entirely within the County’s borders. ACSA is an independent service authority in Virginia solely self-supported from water and sewer fees with no local tax funding.
At Home in the Blue Ridge
ACSA is nestled at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in beautiful, historic Albemarle County, Virginia, approximately 100 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. and 65 miles west of Richmond. Recognized as one of the best places to live in the country, Charlottesville and its surrounding county not only benefit from reliable Albemarle utilities, but also boast a highly skilled workforce, many large employers, excellent schools and one of the finest teaching hospitals in the country. Home to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, the area also offers an abundance of historic and cultural opportunities, including extensive choices for fine dining and world-class entertainment venues. With two state-designated scenic rivers, the county borders Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive. Over 2,000 acres are maintained for leisure activities such as swimming, hiking, biking and fishing.
Partnership with Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority
The Albemarle County service authority purchases water and wastewater treatment from the regional Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority (RWSA), which serves two customers: ACSA and the City of Charlottesville. The RWSA is responsible for the safe impoundment of the water supply, dams and reservoirs; the water and wastewater treatment plants; and major lines to the retail providers. The ACSA executive director sits on the RWSA Board of Directors. About 60% of ACSA’s budget is for RWSA treatment costs and capital-related debt service. ACSA distributes the treated water and collects sewage for treatment while maintaining, expanding and replacing its infrastructure in Albemarle County.
